Most managers skip these 2 steps - and stay stuck for years

Hi there,

I've just published a video that might be one of the most important ones I've made for this channel - and I really hope you'll watch it.

It's called "The EXACT System That Turns Managers Into Leaders" and it's about something I've been thinking about for years.

Why am I so excited about this one?

Because it brings together everything I learned the hard way in my corporate career, and everything I've seen coaching hundreds of managers since. There's a pattern to leadership success - and it's not about luck, timing, or working harder than everyone else.

It's about sequence.

Most managers I meet are trying to do everything at once. They're working on their influence, developing coaching skills, thinking more strategically - all while attacking their never ending to-do list in the day-to-day. And then we wonder why it's all so exhausting.

Here's the thing I've discovered: there's a specific order to building leadership skills. When you get the sequence right, everything else becomes easier. When you get it wrong, you stay stuck no matter how hard you work.

In this video, I walk you through:

  • The two parts of leadership development (and why most people skip part one)
  • Why sometimes your leadership attempts haven't worked the way you hoped
  • The exact 4-step system I call the Leader's Ladder
  • How getting this sequence right completely transformed my effectiveness as a leader (and and gave me a greater sense of of calm and control)

It's about 12 minutes, and honestly, I think it could change how you think about your own development.

Want to know where you are right now?

I've also created a free Leader’s Ladder Assessment that shows you exactly which of these four areas you're strong in and where to focus first. It takes 5 minutes and gives you a personalised action plan.

The assessment has been really eye-opening for the managers I've shared it with. It helps you stop trying to do everything and focus on what will actually make the biggest difference.

Let me know what you think when you've watched it. I read every reply.

Have a great week,

Helen

P.S. If you're thinking "this sounds great but I don't have time" - I know where you are coming from. That's exactly the problem this system solves. The managers who follow this sequence actually create more time because they're not constantly stuck in the day to day work.

Hi there, I'm writing this from Newark Airport, waiting for my flight home after spending the last week in New York with my sister and her family. There's no YouTube video this week - I've been firmly off-duty - but I had two conversations over the past few days that stuck with me, and I wanted to share them with you before I lose them in the noise of getting back to normal life. Both conversations were about the same thing, from completely opposite ends of the work experience spectrum. And...

Hi there, I recently asked you all on YouTube what you struggle with most as a manager, and over a third of respondents said the same thing: following up with your team consistently. I think we've all been there - that point where you're driving home after a long day and suddenly have that ‘oh gosh moment’ when you remember something you planned to follow up on. And you didn't do it. That little spike of stress. That frustration with yourself. That guilt. And then you get home, and obviously...

Hi there, I've been thinking about what matters most for managers right now, and I keep coming back to one thing: coaching. I know there's a lot competing for your attention, AI is coming like a train though the world of work, meanwhile you need to make sure they year end goals are hit. All of that matters. But if I had to choose where to put my energy right now, it would be coaching. Because in a world that's uncertain, relentless, and fast-paced, your ability to connect with people and have...
