Hi there, This week I’ve been thinking about the mindset needed for managers to thrive as leaders. To be honest this is something that I think a lot of leadership development misses, but if not considered can be the real reason people feel stuck in their role I see this pattern often with the managers I work with: You're great at what you do. You deliver results. You genuinely care about your team. But somehow, you're stuck. Maybe you're not getting that promotion you deserve. Or maybe you're just not feeling the respect or confidence you want as a leader. You're working incredibly hard, but you're not cutting through. Well, the answer isn't in working harder or learning more skills, but could be all about how you see yourself as a leader Now, I know "mindset" can sound a bit fluffy, but I think this is something many managers miss. You see, most leadership programmes jump straight to skills - how to give feedback, how to delegate, how to run better meetings. But without the right mindset? Those skills don't stick. You end up right back where you started. The 4 Elements That Change EverythingIn this week’s video I've broken down the four mindset elements that separate managers who stay stuck from those who get promoted and become the respected leaders they want to be. Think of it like a quadrant - four interconnected pieces that work together: 1. Your Vision as a Leader Most managers never get specific about the kind of leader they want to become. Without that clarity, there's nothing pulling you forward - only the pull back into doing what you've always done. Your vision acts like a North Star. 2. Your Values When your actions align with your values, it's like energy flowing through you. This builds confidence and momentum. But most managers have never even identified their core leadership values. 3. Work vs Life Work can consume everything, can’t it? When you see leadership as part of your life (not your entire life), you make better decisions and become far more resilient when life throws you those inevitable curveballs. 4. Your Boundaries Once the first three are clear, you can set real boundaries - not arbitrary rules, but boundaries that actually serve you. They stop you being pulled from pillar to post by every demand. These boundaries guide how you spend your time and where you focus. Importantly, when these four elements are clear, they work together. Your vision pulls you forward. Your values give you energy. Your life context gives you perspective. And your boundaries protect your capacity to lead. Watch the videoI explain this in more detail in the video, including real examples of what a leadership vision sounds like, my own values and why they matter, and how I've used this framework personally. 👉 Watch: Why You're Not Getting Promoted As A Manager (And How to Fix It) It's about 13 minutes that could really change how you think about your leadership. So I'm running a FREE live workshop next week where we're going to explore your leadership mindset together. Hello everyone, This week I want to tell you about a manager I had early in my career. He was one of the best I ever worked for. Not because he was the most senior, or the most strategic, but because he never, ever let a development conversation slip. Some managers I've had would have the occasional career chat, usually around appraisal time, when it was on the form and had to happen. It felt like a box being ticked. And then you'd go back to work and nothing much changed. He was completely...
Hello everyone, Quick question: How much of your work depends on people you don't actually manage? 🤔 If you're like most managers I work with, the answer is probably "most of it." You need input from R&D. Sign-off from finance. Delivery from operations. And none of those people report to you. This is where influence becomes everything. Early in your career, being good at your job is enough. You execute well, you deliver results, you get promoted. But the higher you go, the less that matters...
Hello everyone, The other day, I opened a newsletter from a friend. He’s a business coach who focuses on marketing systems and AI automation. Halfway through, there was this line that stopped me mid-sentence. "You can't read the label from inside the bottle." I'd heard the phrase before. But this time it really got me thinking. Because if ever there was a phrase that captures what my clients repeatedly tell me, it's this. You're so busy in the day-to-day. You're so close to the action. It...
