The leadership reset you need before 2026 starts

Hi there,

This week I’ve been thinking about the mindset needed for managers to thrive as leaders.

To be honest this is something that I think a lot of leadership development misses, but if not considered can be the real reason people feel stuck in their role

I see this pattern often with the managers I work with: You're great at what you do. You deliver results. You genuinely care about your team. But somehow, you're stuck.

Maybe you're not getting that promotion you deserve. Or maybe you're just not feeling the respect or confidence you want as a leader. You're working incredibly hard, but you're not cutting through.

Well, the answer isn't in working harder or learning more skills, but could be all about how you see yourself as a leader

Now, I know "mindset" can sound a bit fluffy, but I think this is something many managers miss.

You see, most leadership programmes jump straight to skills - how to give feedback, how to delegate, how to run better meetings. But without the right mindset? Those skills don't stick. You end up right back where you started.

The 4 Elements That Change Everything

In this week’s video I've broken down the four mindset elements that separate managers who stay stuck from those who get promoted and become the respected leaders they want to be.

Think of it like a quadrant - four interconnected pieces that work together:

1. Your Vision as a Leader Most managers never get specific about the kind of leader they want to become. Without that clarity, there's nothing pulling you forward - only the pull back into doing what you've always done. Your vision acts like a North Star.

2. Your Values When your actions align with your values, it's like energy flowing through you. This builds confidence and momentum. But most managers have never even identified their core leadership values.

3. Work vs Life Work can consume everything, can’t it? When you see leadership as part of your life (not your entire life), you make better decisions and become far more resilient when life throws you those inevitable curveballs.

4. Your Boundaries Once the first three are clear, you can set real boundaries - not arbitrary rules, but boundaries that actually serve you. They stop you being pulled from pillar to post by every demand. These boundaries guide how you spend your time and where you focus.

Importantly, when these four elements are clear, they work together. Your vision pulls you forward. Your values give you energy. Your life context gives you perspective. And your boundaries protect your capacity to lead.

I explain this in more detail in the video, including real examples of what a leadership vision sounds like, my own values and why they matter, and how I've used this framework personally.

It's about 13 minutes that could really change how you think about your leadership.

Understanding these four mindset elements intellectually is one thing. Actually working through them for yourself is where the real transformation happens.

So I'm running a FREE live workshop next week where we're going to explore your leadership mindset together.

This is the perfect time of year to do it, as you look forward to 2026 getting clear on your vision for yourself will help you focus on making sure you achieve your goals.

We'll work through:

  • How you can reset your mindset as leader and how it can make all the difference to your impact and confidence; especially if next year is the year you want to get promoted.
  • Defining your specific leadership vision (with prompts and examples)
  • Setting boundaries that actually stick

📅 Workshop: The Leadership Mindset Reset Workshop

Why I think this worth your time

The move from being stuck ‘doing’ to ‘leading’ starts with clarity about the leader you want to become. Get that right, and everything else follows and becomes easier.

I'd love to see you in the workshop next week where we can work through this together.

Until then,

Helen

P.S. If you can't make the workshop live, register anyway - I'll send the replay to everyone who signs up. But honestly? The magic happens when we do this work together in real-time.

Hi there, Early in my management career, a mentor said something that became one of the best leadership lessons I've ever learned: "Helen, you have to plan time to lead. Otherwise, you'll never get out of the work." At the time, I thought I was planning. I had my task list. I had my calendar. I was managing my time... or so I thought. But here's what I didn't realise at the time: I was planning to DO the work, not to LEAD the work. And that's the mistake most managers make. The Real Problem...

Hi there, Performance review season is coming up, and if you're already feeling that familiar sense of dread. I'm with you as I remember that feeling so well. There's something uniquely exhausting about performance reviews. You're trying to remember an entire year's worth of performance, summarise it fairly, give meaningful feedback, and do it all while staring at a blank document at not long before the meeting when your brain has completely checked out. But what if I told you there's a way...

Hi there, I've just published a video that might be one of the most important ones I've made for this channel - and I really hope you'll watch it. It's called "The EXACT System That Turns Managers Into Leaders" and it's about something I've been thinking about for years. Why am I so excited about this one? Because it brings together everything I learned the hard way in my corporate career, and everything I've seen coaching hundreds of managers since. There's a pattern to leadership success -...
