The Career Conversation That Will Actually Get You Promoted πŸ’¬

Hi there,

There's one conversation that determines who gets promoted and who stays stuck. Your manager should be having it with you, but they're not. So I'm going to teach you how to have it yourself.

Let me ask you something... Have you ever had those awkward conversations with your manager about next steps, only to walk away feeling more unsure than when you started?

The truth is, everyone is busy, including your manager. Careers are changing fast, and the skills needed to be a leader are evolving rapidly, especially with AI transforming how we work. Most managers are sharing their own experience, but the context that experience was gained in is different from what you're facing now.

That's why it's really important that you take ownership of this conversation.

Your manager isn't the be-all and end-all of your promotion anymore. They're part of the jigsaw, an important part, but not the whole picture.

In this week's video I am sharing a framework which will give you clarity about what you need to do next to achieve your career goals.

The GPS Framework

I've developed what I call GPS, because just like sat nav, you need to know where you are, where you're going, and what route you're taking:

  • G is for Goal and Gap: What's the real gap between where you are now and where you want to be?
  • P is for Positioning: How are you currently positioned in your organisation, and what needs to change for you to get where you want to go?
  • S is for Strategy: What's your action plan, and what's the one thing you should focus on for the next 90 days?

I've put together a video that walks you through this entire framework, with the 10 questions you need to ask yourself.

Your Next Step

Schedule 30 minutes this week to have this valuable conversation with yourself. Grab a coffee and work through the GPS questions and create your 90-day focus plan. The work you put in now will be key to your career success in 2026.

Here's to your continued growth,

Helen

Hi there, I've just published a video that might be one of the most important ones I've made for this channel - and I really hope you'll watch it. It's called "The EXACT System That Turns Managers Into Leaders" and it's about something I've been thinking about for years. Why am I so excited about this one? Because it brings together everything I learned the hard way in my corporate career, and everything I've seen coaching hundreds of managers since. There's a pattern to leadership success -...

Hi there, I'm writing this from Newark Airport, waiting for my flight home after spending the last week in New York with my sister and her family. There's no YouTube video this week - I've been firmly off-duty - but I had two conversations over the past few days that stuck with me, and I wanted to share them with you before I lose them in the noise of getting back to normal life. Both conversations were about the same thing, from completely opposite ends of the work experience spectrum. And...

Hi there, I recently asked you all on YouTube what you struggle with most as a manager, and over a third of respondents said the same thing: following up with your team consistently. I think we've all been there - that point where you're driving home after a long day and suddenly have that β€˜oh gosh moment’ when you remember something you planned to follow up on. And you didn't do it. That little spike of stress. That frustration with yourself. That guilt. And then you get home, and obviously...
